True happiness

After a recent conversation with a friend I have been thinking a lot about happiness. Even with my big Ex's, even though things haven't worked out between us, I have always wanted them to be happy. If being with me doesn't make them happy, I care for them enough to hope that another situation and relationship will make them that way.

My friend mentioned that you can't ever be truly happy. Maybe the odd moment in life, but a permanent state of contentment is not attainable. I don't think this is true. I think if the majority of time you are feeling down and woeful and there are only brief sparks in your life, then either you need to completely change your life situation or at least remedy the aspects in your life that aren't working. I am too cynical and bitter to think that work can bring you fulfillment - you may enjoy it but you will never feel amazing about your job every day. I guarantee there isn't a person on this planet who wakes up EVERY day and rushes to their jobs. I still think work is there to facilitate the process of you accomplishing the things that are personal and important to you (ie money!).

I think happiness is created by the friends you surround yourself with, your family and the person who you love. Passion, whether for art, sport, sex, music, film, or whatever is what gives you the brief little buzz of pleasure. I think that the structure of your life, how you live it and who you live it with should make you happy. Most importantly you must be happy with yourself and who you are before you can ever be happy with anything else.

Being with my ex did not make me happy, so I moved on. Sometimes you have to realise that things are not going to work and have to make that brave decision to change your life. As the cliche goes, you should only regret the things you didn't do. It is hard and courageous to take the action to move on and look for that happiness again. No one should have to say, this is the situation I have put myself in and I have to live with it. Each and everyone of us deserves to be happy.

Today is Friday and soon the weekend will kick in and the sun is shining, so go and see the people you love, enjoy their company and have a cracking time. In the immortal words of that great philosopher Bobby Ferrin - "Don't worry, be happy"
